Volition

On 18 September the Liberal Democrats, at their annual conference in Brighton, predictably passed a resolution to grant amnesty to illegal immigrants. It is easy to imagine that anyone with misgivings about this would have been unable to voice them out of fear. It is truly Orwellian. In 1968 Enoch Powell faced much opposition but no one doubted his courage. He described immigration into the UK as a "preventable evil" brought about by "our own volition and our own neglect".
On 19 September the main BBC news item was a report by the Chief Constable of Cambridgeshire linking the great increase in crime with increased immigration. More than 100 languages are spoken in the county, we were informed.
And the Commission for Racial Equality reported: "Britain is more divided than ever."
Where's the equality? Some Londoners boast that it is the most polyglot region in the world (with more than 300 languages spoken). There won't be equality until more than 300 languages are spoken in other parts of the world.
